Background of the study
Hausa proverbs encapsulate the wisdom, values, and cultural heritage of Hausa society, offering insights into communal beliefs and practices. Translating these proverbs poses significant challenges, as their meanings are deeply embedded in specific cultural contexts that may not have direct equivalents in other languages (Bello, 2023). Cultural context plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the translation of Hausa proverbs retains the intended metaphorical and symbolic meanings. Translators must consider not only the literal meaning of words but also the cultural connotations and social nuances that give proverbs their power. This study examines how cultural context influences the translation of Hausa proverbs, focusing on the methods used to capture both literal and figurative meanings. By analyzing translated collections of Hausa proverbs and interviewing professional translators, the research aims to identify effective strategies for cultural adaptation. The goal is to ensure that translations convey the richness of Hausa wisdom while making them accessible to audiences unfamiliar with the culture (Garba, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Translating Hausa proverbs often results in the loss of cultural nuances and figurative meanings, as literal translations fail to convey the embedded symbolism (Bello, 2023). The lack of standardized methods for incorporating cultural context leads to inconsistent and sometimes misleading translations (Garba, 2024). This study aims to identify the challenges that arise from the influence of cultural context on Hausa proverb translations and to explore strategies that can better preserve the original meanings.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine current translation approaches for Hausa proverbs.
  2. To identify challenges related to cultural context.
  3. To recommend methods for improved cultural adaptation.

Research questions:

  1. How does cultural context affect Hausa proverb translation?
  2. What challenges arise from literal versus adaptive translations?
  3. What strategies can improve cultural fidelity in translations?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the crucial role of cultural context in translating Hausa proverbs, contributing to the preservation of cultural wisdom. The findings will aid translators and cultural scholars in developing more nuanced translation practices, ensuring that the richness of Hausa traditions is maintained (Bello, 2023; Garba, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Hausa proverb translations and does not extend to other literary forms or languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Cultural context: The cultural background and social nuances inherent in language use.
  • Proverbs: Traditional sayings that encapsulate cultural wisdom.
  • Adaptive translation: Translation that incorporates cultural and contextual adaptation.
